Background
Best & Less opened its first store in Parramatta in 1965. It was still a family-owned
business when Pepkor acquired it in 1998. The takeover marked the start of
a strong growth phase for the chain which doubled in size within seven years.
This rate of growth is continuing. Not only were new stores being opened
but existing stores were also renovated extensively to ensure a consistent
quality of ambience throughout the chain. Operating initially mainly on South East
Australia, Best & Less has in recent years grown strongly in West Australia
which remains the area with the biggest growth potential for the immediate
future.
Positioning
The chain's large stores, situated mainly in conveniently located
shopping centres, offer extensive ranges of clothing and footwear
for the whole family. It also stocks a wide variety of household
textile products. Its objective is to provide consumers with the
best possible shopping experience. To this end it strives to offer
the highest possible quality at the most competitive prices in
an attractive and pleasing environment. It sells a wide range of
hugely popular brands such as Mango, Bonds, Rio, Antz Pantz and
Slazenger. Its buyers travel the world on a regular basis in an
effort to improve the chain's product ranges while a quality assurance
laboratory was established in China, a major supplier of merchandise
to the chain.
