Where most traditionally white brands and businesses are targeting the "Black Diamond" market, John Craig has the unique marketing challenge of taking what has long been seen as a black brand and introducing it to the rest of South Africa's multi-cultural society.
John Craig has since the 1950s been synonymous with selling top brands - who knows how many thousands of African men have been married wearing Florshiem shoes, a brand that has been manufactured since the late 1800s. It has for generations been the destination of men wanting to dress elegantly and classically.
In the 1950s, John Craig became the first men's outfitter to offer credit to customers. The chain introduced free tailoring and alterations, a service still available today. It also introduced a lay-bye service and a money-back guarantee, another commitment to quality that is still part of the brand.
Since 2006 John Craig has been moving increasingly into major suburban malls, opening on average six stores a year.
John Craig is the home of a number of exclusive brands such as Muratti and Carano, which both offer Italian styled ranges.
