In 1965, PEP set out to offer affordable, quality merchandise to everyone in South Africa at the lowest possible price.  Having triumphed over adversity and some rough times along the way, it is today not only still selling merchandise at the lowest possible prices but is also growing energetically.

PEP Stores is the largest single-brand retailer in Southern Africa with close to 1 600 stores. One of the foremost brands in the country, it is believed to have the best retail distribution system, the biggest store network and, most importantly, the best band of people working in retail in South Africa.

More than 15 000 people spend their time promoting the PEP promise to enable everyone to look and feel good. This promise is supported by good financial performance, a unique people culture, one that literally binds everyone together. It’s called Sikhula KunYe (we are growing together) and it promotes growth, dignity, respect and fun.  Staff members are encouraged to express their values of honesty, passion and resourcefulness; they are provided with the means and ability to succeed in their jobs, and they are held accountable and awarded accordingly to their achievements.

As PEP customers increasingly buy in shopping centres, so PEP is opening more and more stores in malls. The new store design projects a more modern look that blends in well in a shopping centre environment without compromising the PEP brand. More emphasis is also being placed on creating a pleasant shopping experience to help PEP achieve its aim of being the friendliest retailer in South Africa.

PEP operates on a cash basis only, keeps its margins to the minimum and has a low cost culture. Its buyers source merchandise both locally and internationally that is in tune with the demands of its customers for a wide range of fashionable merchandise of good quality. PEP aims to continue as the dominant mass-market retailer for every-day-lowest-price items of clothing, footwear, textiles, homewares and cellular products.

By collaborating with its suppliers and investing in its supply chain as well as its planning and merchandising departments, PEP focuses on integrated systems in order to shorten cycle times, respond swiftly to customers’ changing needs and reduce prices even further.
